Gum Disease

Bleeding gums and bad breath may mean the presence of Periodontal (gum) disease.  Good oral hygiene is the cornerstone for your dental health and is essential in maintaining your overall health. If left untreated it can lead to more serious conditions such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes; a healthy mouth is the key to a healthy body.

Gum disease results from the build-up of plaque, which can lead to inflammation and infection of the gums.

The treatment involves patient education as to the causes as well as instruction on home management and therapy involving professional teeth cleaning to remove the infection from your gums. Effective home plaque control techniques will help to prevent gum disease and tooth decay, making them less likely to progress into more serious and costly dental ailments.

Wisdom Teeth & Root Canal Treatment

The very mention of these words can cause unwanted images to conjure up in the mind. At United Dental your dentist will investigate the cause of your pain and present a variety of options to tackle the problem so that you can ultimately arrive at an informed decision about what to do next and most importantly are pain-free.

Wisdom Teeth generally appear throughout the late teens and early twenties but can sometimes appear later. In some cases they emerge in to their correct position without complication, however, often they can cause dental issues and require extraction to prevent further discomfort and problems.

The majority of complications are either caused by the wisdom teeth becoming impacted, or when they partially erupt. Impacted wisdom teeth are the result of the teeth growing into other teeth or the surrounding tissues and bone, often causing crowding and discomfort. Partially erupted wisdom teeth are also problematic as they leave a small pocked of gum exposed and vulnerable to painful, recurrent infection.

Root Canal Treatment involves the removal of the infected nerve from a tooth. The infection may enter the tooth by decay, cracks, deep fillings, and gum disease. Following the completion of the treatment the area is then sterilised and sealed and a white filling is placed to prevent any recurrence of infection. Depending on the severity of the damage a dental crown may be placed over the top, which enhances the strength, durability and appearance of the tooth.

Teeth Grinding

Believe it or not but a sizeable proportion of us grind our teeth in our sleep. This nocturnal habit, otherwise known as bruxism has consequences in terms of tooth wear, cracked teeth, tooth sensitivity and even headaches. The solution can sometimes be to have a night-guard or splint fitted which can help stop this process and minimise its consequences.
